„More interesting than the summit“ |
|
| |
Geneva, 6 December 2003. While the government delegations are still discussing the contentious sections of the WSIS documents, people are busy setting up the stalls and exhibitions at the Palexpo exhibition centre, and the final preparations are taking place for the various side- and alternative events. More than 200 such events will take place around the Geneva summit.
These events will stretch from the major media conference World Electronic Media Forum to the counter-/alternative-events within the framework of WSIS? We Seize!. You can find a list of most events on WSIS-Online.net.
The Swiss civil society platform Comunica-CH has compiled a selection of particularly interesting events. Many of these approach the themes of WSIS in a critical and contentious way and highlight those issues which the WSIS sidelines. Events include, for example, the World Forum on Communication Rights. An overview (a poster in pdf format) is available here.
Referring the huge number and the thematic depth of side-events, Bruno Clement from the Swiss journalist union Comedia recentlya said: „What will happen outside the summit will be more interesting than what will happen inside.“
A further secret regarding „what is happening outside“, which has led to much speculation, was lifted a few days ago: a demonstration against the summit has finally been called for. It will start on Friday 12th December at noon from the Geneva main station.
